Horatius Cocles and the Defense of Rome
One of Rome’s most celebrated moments came during the Etruscan assault on the Pons Sublicius. According to legend, the Roman soldier Horatius Cocles single-handedly held off the Etruscans while his comrades destroyed the bridge behind him, preventing an invasion. His bravery symbolized the resilience and determination of the young Republic.
The Battle for Veii
The war with the Etruscans continued for decades. One of the most decisive conflicts was the siege of Veii, a powerful Etruscan city just north of Rome. After years of fighting, the Romans, led by dictator Camillus, finally captured Veii in 396 BCE, marking a turning point in Rome’s expansion and solidifying its dominance over central Italy.
